Character: Mal, daughter of Maleficent, Descendants I and II.
Age: 17
Canon: Descendants movie series
Canon Point: Post Descendants 2
Background: The long and convoluted history of Mal.
Personality:
When you are the chosen leader of four kids who are considered the worst of an island filled with villains and their spawn, most would assume that you were an absolute monster. Now, while Mal would willing admit that she could be (and still can be, if pushed far enough), a mischief maker and a schemer of epic proportions, even she will begrudgingly add that she is more than the sum of her flaws. It is not from some false sense of modesty, but rather from the long emotionally abusive relationship with her mother.
You see, Mal spent her first sixteen years of life never measuring up to her mother's idea of True Evil. No matter what Mal did, what cruelties she inflicted on her mother's goblins or on her own fellow schoolmates, her mother was always testing her and finding her lacking of a certain killer instinct. Maleficent blamed this on Mal's father, who as far as Mal knows, was a human and not a powerful magical force like her mother, a fairy with the darkest and most powerful magic (or used to be, since the citizens of Auradon had basically cut them off from all uses of their magical gifts on the Isle of the Lost, but never you mind that.)
So when it came down to it, Mal was always putting herself forward as the biggest bad and the leader of the three other biggest bads, taking candy from babies and being a general menace to a society of villains, when deep down inside she was a little girl who only wanted her mother to look at her with as much love and pride as Maleficient looked at her raven, Diablo. In fact, if it was not for her chosen family of Evie, Jay, and Carlos, she would have probably driven herself right off the edge trying to prove herself.
It was her friends who time and time and again, showed Mal that she was a lot more than her mother ever hoped to be. From Evie, she learned that she didn't need to compete to have her love and affection, but simply had to be there for her. From Jay she learned that she could be herself, and still have a place on a magically perfect island like Auradon. From Carlos she learned that she didn't need to focus on what made her mother great, but could turn to what she in turn loved, which was creating beautiful murals and paintings.
From Ben though, she learned the most important lesson of all, and that was she could choose what was truly important to her, and that was her love for him, for her friends and even for her new life on Auradon (even if she's still pretty sure all she wants to some days is run out down the halls screaming and spray-painting everything.) She is still a work in progress, she'll readily admit that. She still feels that even after a year at Auradon that she has something she needs to prove - that she's good enough for Ben, for Evie, Jay and Carlos. She knows she still has a dark side, but instead of trying to suppress all the good and all the bad, she has chosen to be both. It's not easy, and she's still working out all the kinks, but she has never felt like she loved herself more than she does, right now.
Abilities: Mal has a strong magical ability inherited from her mother - she can cast spells, make potions, and use magical items easily. She is also very discerning, able to come up with plans and plots that actually work, with a pure devious side if pushed. The ability she is most proud of, the one she is trying to focus on now, is that of her talents as a mural painter. Her chosen medium is spray paint, but she has a greater love for oils and watercolors now that she has access to them.
Alignment: Elios, because everything she is, everything she has become, is an equal measure of hate and love; how her mother's hate formed her childhood but the love of Ben and her chosen family has in many ways saved her.

Remember that we ask for samples that show 1) core character portrayal and 2) some use of emotions, such as environmental effect. You can also use the same sample source for both, just make sure to directly link or quote the emotion portion. We highly encourage using the Test Drive, and you can use prompts from the Test Drives, Intro Logs, and the Task board if you need them. Refer to the main application page for links and more suggestions.
General Sample: With Evie.
Emotion Sample: With Diaval.
Questions: Mal can turn into a giant purple dragon if she is channeling enough emotion into it - would she be able to do that here?
